current roller-furling jib on Capri 14.2 does not have a UV protection edge. What is importance of same? Local sailmaker says would need 19' of 10" UV protected dacron @ $8/foot to do the job on leech & foot of jib. Any input on importance or other options. Also am considering replacing the roller-furling with standard forestay, so can remove the jib. Input welcomed.

Jib Protection

Dacron is easily damaged by UV radiation (exposure to sunlight). A sacrificial layer is added to the leach and foot so that as the jib is furled that is what is exposed, not the sail. Sometimes this layer is Sunbrella, but Sunbrella is heaver than the dacron used in the sail and is not preferred.

Make a sock

My C22 furler has a sock that I pull up over it using a block at the top of the mast. Catalinadirect.com sells them and I am sure you could make one out of Sunbrella if you are handy. Basically a long narrow piece of fabric with a zipper all the way. One zipper comes up and the other down allowing you to leave on the halyards.
