using your boom vang in gusty winds?

ive noticed in gusty conditions beating up wind close hauled that hardening the boom vang reduces heel and keeps the boat on its feet try it.

Yes, You Are Right

Tightening the boom vang tends to flatten the main, which in turn reduces heeling.

Well yes and well no

All depends on wind speed, sea conditions, and the particular point of sail on which one is going. One may wish to twist the main that will spill wind from the top while pointing. To twist the main, one releases the boom vang, and the main sheet while at it. I’ve found spilling wind in this fashion can be beneficial, although I admit I’ve set up my boom kicker to help by lifting the boom about 10 degrees off vertical.
