What is the best way to use the jib on an 18 daysailer? It has snaps to attach to the headstay. Can I set it up to be able to lift the jib from the cockpit after getting out of the harbor. Have thought of roller furling and am new to this size boat. I learned in a 12 Paceship so had to rig it on shore. This is a racing sail and I bought the boat without seeing it rigged. Any comments appreciated, former power boater!!!!

hoisting the jib

Hank it on the headstay then either us a sheet line or some other line to keep it in check until you get in the open. A down haul might work in light air. Hope this helps Harley

I have a 1974 DS II

I now have roller furling on it, but have left the snaps on for those really windy days, that I need a stiff luff. Anyhow, I didn't have the roller furler when I first got the boat, so I would hank on the snaps, and have the sail down and held in place bunched up near the stem head by using a bungee cord from one side cleat to the other. When it came time to hoist the sail, I would go forward, release the bungee, go back to the cockpit and hoist the jib halyard. The picture shows my set up now.
