Using the furling jib

I just bought a 170 and never used a furling jib before....need some advice. Any advice on how to furl the jib when returning to port? In other words, is it better to furl the jib into the wind or when the jib is tight while sailing downwind? I also had a problem that when I tried to furl the jib, it did not roll all the way up. The jib could have used 4-5 more turns but there was no way to turn it any more as the furling line was all the way pulled in. How do you ensure that part of the jib doesn't remain flapping in the wind. Thanks in advance.

What I do

I furl in any wind direction. Make sure you don't crank it too hard, e.g., if it doesn't want to come in don't force with a winch. Keep the furler washed with fresh water, salt will make it sticky. As for coming up short, I think you don't have enough turns of the furling line on the drum. You can remedy this by pulling the entire line forward, coiling it, and wrapping a few more turns on the drum, then leading it aft again.

Short

Inexplicably, the furler comes up short now and then. Just roll it in manually and adjust the line accordingly.

could be you do not have enough line,

perhaps the amount of line you do have was calculted for a 145-155 headsail. If the drum is full and there is no more room for additional wraps you will need to go to a smaller diameter of line. Be sure the smaller diameter still has the strength of the thicker diameter.
