I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using a normal shaft outboard vs. a long shaft model on a capri 18 ? The capri 18 has a very low engine mount to start with, so it seems like a normal shaft engine would work fine. If anyone has any comments, I appreciate them. Thanks, Chris

Probably would work ok

I have a long shaft 6hp 4 stroke Nissan (I know it's overkill, but at elevation, you lose alot of power), and it seems to be way lower than necessary. I often only put the bracket down to the intermediate point, and it is still well under water. Are you talking about a new C-18? If so, let me know, and I will measure mine, and a couple of others here at our lake, and let you know. I do think we all have long shafts though - same dealer. Dave

More info

Thanks for the reply. My boat is an '89. I currently have an old Johnson 5hp (long-shaft), but it really gives me fits. I've never paid much attention to the physical location of the engine mount, but I certainly have never had any problems with my current engine. I'm looking at the new Suzuki 6hp/4-stroke which really looks like a sweet engine. It is only 55 lbs. (same as the Suzuki 4hp) and can be outfitted with an alternator rather easily. My issue is that I'd like to use this on my inflatable as well, which would be better served with a normal-shaft then a long. Also, my long range plans in the next few years is to move to a larger boat (probably a Catalina 320) and then move the engine to the inflatable full-time. If you know anyone else who may be able to comment on this, please let me know. Thanks, Chris
