How is a horseshoe ring used by a man overboard? If a person puts the horseshoe around their waist or chest, the hard inside foam cracks. Is the ring designed to just hang on, or should the person put it around their waist or chest and not worry about cracking it?

*yks IMHO - Get Rid of It !

I firmly believe that horseshoe rings are obsolete. I don't think you can even buy one anymore. Will the "D"-rings hold a line or clip? There was one on my boat when I bought it and I quickly got rid of it for a Lifesling, which seemed so much more practical and useful. I also bought inflatable life jackets and always keep them handy to don when conditions dictate. :) Fortunately, I have never had to use the Lifesling or any other safety device. One thing that I always do to evaluate the usefulness/readiness of a safety item is what I, as skipper, would do to recover a MOB or what could be done if it were me that was the MOB.;)

Disagree

Even a cracked horseshoe will keep one afloat. The trouble with the Lifesling as the only throwable is that it is attached to the boat. If you are moving along at 6 or 7 knots or more, it won't be long before the lifesling is moving away from the mob who wasn't able to reach it in time. The Lifesling is good, but one must have a throwable not attached to the boat and it is the first thing, after the mob, to go over.

And as many throwables.....

as you can quickly throw overboard which will give the MOB more items to get too. A MOB buoy would be great also..
