Hi all, wanted to share a useful reference I got from Gerard Abbatello at [tillerbender@sbcglobal.net] while at this years 2010 rOnDAYvous.

He showed me how I can call a bouy anywhere using the 5 digit reference number on the buoy and get detailed information on conditions for Wind, Wave Height, Pressure, Air Temp, and Dew Point.

I sail in central Long Island sound and found buoy 44039 to be the closest. You can look-up buoys here - http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/ This is the National Data Buoy Center.

Use telephone number 1.888.701.8992 wait for the auto message enter 1 then enter 5 digit reference number then confirm by entering 1. example using central Long Island sound buoy 18887018992-1-44039-1

I went one step further by creating a contact called Buoy 44039 and adding the number with the appropriate pauses and reference numbers to auto dial right to the buoy upon dialing the contact. I use a blackberry on the Verizon network so your experience may vary.

Here's how, create a new contact. Call it Buoy 44039 or whatever reference you looked up on the National Data Buoy Center. Type in the 18887018992 in a number field then add 3 pauses by accessing the menu and selecting "Add Pause" followed by the number 1 then another pause then 5 digit reference number for the buoy then a pause then number 1. It will look like this 18887018992PPP1P44039P1 save the contact and try calling it.

Enjoy. Again I can't take the credit for this, Gerard Abbatello at [tillerbender@sbcglobal.net] is the man!!!

Before heading offshore and before I had the internet on my phone this was the way I accessed the info of wave and wind conditions off Islip and Montauk......having the internet so accessible gives me many options to find out conditions before heading out the inlet

That's cool. I think with my iPhone I can get mobile data but sometime I can't get 3G and the Edge is the other network that seems to have more coverage. Either way, I can call it in. Thanks for sharing.

That's kinda kewl and I just might try it with Halibut Bank, but... can't you just phone the weather report and get reports from ALL the nearby bouys and stations? (it's 604-666-3655 here on the West Coast). Or if you have mobile internet get it from there.

EDIT: Aw, crap! You can't access that number from Canada. :(

Those are great but only offshore. The Chesapeake Bay isn't included.

Been Available for a While

I posted on them a while back but if you’re going to use the same one repeatedly making a contact is a slick idea.

We used it several years ago when crossing the Gulf before we all had "Smart Phones" with all the weather apps available for it.

Here is a commercial number that will work where the toll free number will not:
301-713-9620

Looks like they moved their operation to DC from Mississippi at least the phone center has.

I taught a safe boating class to the guys who maintain the buoys out at the Stennis Space Center when I lived in Biloxi. The size of some of those buoys and the anchor gear for them is incredible. They are impressive in the water but are absolutely awesome on dry land.
