I can only imagine the joy when Edison's electricity arrives on your fore deck!
Ah ha yep. Retirement boat for sure will be wired with new-fangled technology. :D

Talkin bout that guy Shorty Edison? He has a rather corrosive personality.
Armstrong is the salt of the earth. People think he's difficult but once you get to know him, you like him for his simplicity and reliability. He'll always be there for ya.

Longest year-long passage I ever made was the 2 weeks spent anchoring down the coast, cranking the Tigress. Painful slow. In the end, I donned gloves, stood on the foredeck and hand-over-hand retrieved the chain.

Been using our Tigress for 12 years. Bit of work, but two speeds make short work of talking up 100' of rode.
Never had a breaker pop, no shorts, corroded connections and gives me some am exercise. Every now and then think about an electric windlass, then look at price and calculate install work and that thought quickly disappears.

Yep. A new electric was top of list when we bought our boat. Still doing fine with our manual...hauling up 100' to 200' of chain with a 65 lb Mantus

My Simpson Lowrance 555 is 2 speeds. I mostly use the hi speed except the first 2" of getting the anchor shank over the roller.
Overall it comes up fast enough. If spaying thick mud off the chain, its more than fast enough. One hand on the spray and one for the windlass.

How about a 33 kilo?

A 33 kilo (73 lb) older (described as "pre-scandal") Rocna has become available. Does the group think that's too big for a 44 foot 22,000 lb cruiser? Note: I DO have an electric windlass

That would be my choice, and all the rest of your ground tackle system needs to match up to handle the hook. Make sure the wide shank cross-section fits your bow roller assembly. Large heavy anchors stay put, even on short scope.

Richard, you can figure it out yourself, here:

Anchor System Sizing Tables (Reply #6) & Why Swivels are a bad idea http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4990.msg30400.html#msg30400

Don't take anyone's answer as right for you.

Your boat, your choice.

I have a NZ Rocna, it's been great.
Thanks for the response.

What's the significance of an "NZ" Rocna?

It looks like the tables are for component loads. I was wondering about the efficacy of a 73 lb Rocna on a boat my size. Did I miss the answer in there?

1 Before they went to China. Same as what you called "pre-scandal"

2. The answer IS "in there." YOU pick the size of the boat and the WIND speeds you want to size your gear for. The tables then tell you the LOAD you need for the gear. The Rocna tables include the load that the anchor will sustain. A combination of planning and reverse engineering. It took me about ten minutes to figure it out to, first, select my Rocna size, and, second, to size the components.

We have a 44 pound rocna on our 31 ft boat and my 12 year old daughter pulls it up routinely with our manual windlass. We have used his anchor for 300 days a year for the last 5 years...never an issue.
