Using a headsail bag

I have a Catalina 30 and just bought a headsail bag for my 110 and 150 jibs. We put the 110 into the bag, and Saturday I'll go sailing with it. Question:

I'm hoping I can leave the bag on the mainstay all the time; does anyone here use a mailsail bag, and if so, what do you do with it while sailing? Do you open any of the fasteners along the mainstay?

Thanks,

Bob

There are still some old school sailors in our marina that keep their jibs in sailbags to stow them on deck. Hank on sails can have their advantages, such as they don't jamb on a furler if the halyard wraps, etc. The main issue is that if the bag is not truly watertight when stowed, sea water will invariably creep in, & cause dacron sails to get mildew spots & staining. Once they're stained its tough to get out. Although if a furler doesn't wind up tight enough it can allow water into a furled headsail & cause staining as well.

I just got this boat, and it doesn't have a furler; I'll probably put one on before the year is out.

I got this bag from Catalina Direct; it looks pretty well-made, but time will tell. The top zips, and the mainstay edge uses twist locks.

A friend at the marina keeps advising me to go a season without a furler, just to see if I really want one. Having just spent a tidy sum, I'll probably wait a few months.

You'll want one. You may not need one, but you'll want one. I've already gone through one season hank on and will be sailing this season hank on as well....but I sure do want roller furling. Everyone says it's one of the very best upgrades you can do.

Thanks, it's a beautiful boat, in super condition. I'm with you; I think I'll be wanting to add a furler sooner rather than later.

The only downside of a furler is that it'll mean that I'll sail one jib all the time, unless I want to have both my 110 and my 150 both modified to put the foil on them. I'm planning to put the 150 on there and then I can roll it up if need be... not what racers do, but then again, the C30 isn't a racing boat. :)

Bob, what many folks with that issue do is buy a new or used 130 or 135 for the furler.

Woman at Profurl told me I don't have to modify the sail to put it on their furler; I thought I had to put a foil put on the leading edge?

I'm seriously considering putting the furler on, but I'm going to give the sail bag a try...

I'm interested in a furler too and would have ordered an Alado this week but the Mrs caught me and made me do my due diligence; a call to the local sail loft was the kicker- about $500 to remove the hanks/add luft tape and sacraficial to my current 140 genny.
Then add the fairlead blocks, furler line and halyards.
So, even though the furler is within my budget when I add up the other required bits and pieces it's about double the price of the furler.
I'll definitely do this but not now.
Sounds like the Profurl lady didn't know what she was talking about.
And have you shopped around? Profurl does make top line equipment and the prices are pretty top line too!

No, it's I who know very little about furlers...

She did mention luft tape; so does the sail have to be modified to add luft tape?

Yeah, the loft will remove the leading edge, hanks and hank grommets and sew on the luft tape which slides into the furlers foil. Our local sailmaker said he would also replace the tack and head grommets.
Might check out Alado furlers, I read great reviews by people on SBO and the materials and construction are far above the other systems I researched.
