Using a Barberhauler (Cross Haul) with genny

Using a Barberhauler (Cross Haul) with genny I have a question on how or what to connect a barberhauler to, when there is no winch or jib track handy (inboard).In an earlier post was a reference to decribing the barberhauler in more detail, but I haven't found that post.On my Hunter 27 (pretty basic sail controls), I currently lead the 140% Genoa fairleads back to a snap shackle on the toe rail, but am at a loss on how to bring the fairleads inboard. I don't think the teak grab rails would be a good idea, but might need to add some device to accomodate a barberhauler?Thanks,Bob Early

Bob: I'm going to kill 2 birds with one stone and first describe to others what a Barberhauler is. It is a short piece of line that is attached to a jib sheet and in effect takes the place of the inboard track. I attach the line with a sliding knot similiar to what Boy Scouts used to secure their tent lines. This knot makes the Barberhauler easy to remove. The background of the name Barberhauler is interesting. It is named after two brothers who sailed Lightnings against dennis Conner in San Diego. Both brothers are dentists and Dennis Conner is one of their patients.By experimenting with the barberhauler or your inboard track, you should be able to pick up 1 knot of speed. That is how effective this devise is.I was on a race boat in Long Beach a while back. We were in 6th position and I asked the skipper if I could try the Barberhauler. He was reluctant - I mean we are in 6th, what can he lose? Sometimes I wonder why these guys ask me to sail with them if they don't want to try my suggestions. Anyway, he relents and lo and behold we picked up 3 spots. We lost them on the next leg but that leg made the race for me. Bob, in the above race, I just hooked into the jib sheet and sat on the cabin top and hauled the sheet inboard and the boat took off. On my own boat, I did not have inboard tracks so I just ran the Barberhauler across to the lazy or unused winch. Another way to do it would be to somehow attach one of the nice Garhauer snatch blocks to something on the lazy side and crank on that. Can you use the lazy winch?Grab rails or stanchions are not a good idea as attachment points. You have to find something else more secure.

Windward toe rail

Couldn't you hook a snatch block to the windward toe rail and use the lazy winch to haul? I've been wondering myself how to do this without inboard genoa tracks. The only attachment point for sheet blocks on my 78 H30 is on the perforated toe rail.
