I'm looking to get a first sailboat for my family of 4(and 1 on the way). Looking for something that needs some elbow grease and work.

Found one that i really like for next to nothing, i could probably get my money back by simply taking the trailer to the scrap yard.

It needs sails, all masts/rigging appears to be there, i will need to gut/refinish the interior which is good, i get the interior i want.

I'm looking for a place that i can get a good set of used sails or a recomendation for a place to get (don't hate me for this) but cheap new sails.

For time being this is going to be a boat that stays on the lake but once i get her in top shape (all new sheets/rigging) i hope to take her on some costal/protectected waters along the gulf and around the charelston areas.

I will probably need more than a few parts for this boat and wanted someone to point me in the right direction.

Welcome to the boat restoration club! Sail kits are available at Sailrite on the web. I don't know if they have a pattern for your specific boat but it might be worth a shot. Parts can be an issue but, once again, the Internet is your best resource. I restored a V-17 some years back. At one time I had quite a list of Venture resources but, alas, I no longer have the file. There are Venture owner websites out there and they can be a lot of help as well. JSI may well have your running rigging specs and Dwyer can probably help you with standing rigging. There is a company out there that makes the Venture rudders in fibreglass. Just about everything else is available at West Marine. Havencraft has some original parts including winches and tillers. In my opinion there aren't many worthwhile things as fixing up an old boa though it usually involves a lot more time and expense than you would think.

One other thing I forgot. I don't know if the V21 had a liner but the 17 did not. I used a foam-backed fabric with 3M headliner adhesive and it looked pretty nice.

Start here to get an idea of what an inexpensive set of new sails will cost. Note the dimensions provided(luff, leech, foot) and use them for future searches. www.thesailwarehouse.com

I did my own quick search for the V 21... a basic OEM jib for pre 1980 was $220, a basic OEM mainsail was $475.

do you mind getting me a link to where you found that?

I could not find the pre 80 v21 sail listings on that site.

That price is well cheaper than the 700+ i found on a few other sites

The big blue/green box on the right hand side of the page. "select new and used sails"

Choose V21, not V21 pre 1980. All the sails will show up for headsails and mainsails, pre-1980 sails will be noted. There are no pre 1980 mains... they're all the same.

I scour ebay! Also Craigslist.
I have found several sails for our boat that way...and have paid as much as $102.50 and as low as $25.00 for mainsails.
I know the luft and leach and just seek them out.
The last one was for an Oday 22 like ours with the logos!
Good luck.

FYI... it's LUFF, LEECH, FOOT........ go back to your sailwarehouse search.. the dimensions are listed. All the mainsails are the same: luff=21.75ft, leech=23.40ft, foot 9.75ft. If you look at the headsails you will see different dimensions depending on whether you want a jib, genoa or stormsail.......

I highly recommend you take advantage of this resource and go through the entire sight. You will learn how to measure sails, what LP means and a bunch of other important stuff that all sailboat ownerrs need to know...

Check out Bacon Sails. They have a selector program that will tell you what sails that they have (used) that will fit your boat.

http://www.baconsails.com/sailsearch

It is a good idea to know the dimensions before you order any sail. You do not know if a previous owner modified something.

do you mean raise mast, run rigging and measure the distance from attachment points from sail to rigging?

This boat comes with no sails. Which is how i got it for next to nothing.

You can measure your boat for sails without having any actual sails.... like I said... read the articles in thesailwarehouse.com ...or... any other sailmaker website will tell you how to measure your boat for sails. You will have to raise the mast... but... you've done that already, haven't you? Raise the mast on the trailer... just keep the boat tied to the trailer until you get it secured.

Re: Used sails for a 1979 venture 21? i will be needing part

Just got the boat home last night.

I have yet to raise the mast. The trailer started falling apart on the way home and i need to repair it before getting up into the boat.

Hope to raise the mast tonight after repairs are done.

Any one got a link to a diagram on how to run the mast/boom cables? I'm sure they are selfexplanitory, i'm fairly mechancily inclinded but this is my first sailboat.

I want to set everything up and take pics before i remove all hardware for painting. That way i know/remember where everything is.

I'm completely new to sailboats. Been a power boater for the past 10 years. I'm ready to slow things down a bit and use less fuel while i'm at it.
