short shaft
Hi. On my 22 the long shaft outboard (7.5 hp) I normally used had some problems. While I was fixing it, I used a 3.5 hp Nissan short shaft. It worked great and really suprised me how well it pushed the boat. It pushed it well in flat water, in contrary currents and wind. However, when the waves kicked up, 2+ feet, the motor would fall into the troughs when I had the outboard bracket in the lowest position. I might point out though, that when the waves were 2+ feet, the wind was available for sailing and I didn't need the motor. Bottom line is the short shaft seemed to work ok getting we out of the channel in moderate chop and wind. I am not sure why a long shaft is necessary. I am just relating my personal experience.
