I have a chance to buy a '87 28.5, one owner, in very good condition for under $11,000. Appears to be a good price from what I've seen on this site. Any specific problem areas I should check or areas I need checked right after getting it? The bottom was painted last summer, new main and jib 2000. Any comments?

Guy: Unless you know how to survey a boat you should have a survey done BEFORE you buy it. A survey should run about $10/ft +/-. This price seems less than 50% of the current going price (I may be way off), so I'd be skeptical of this boat. If you have a survey and get the boat for $11k you KNOW that you got a good deal. A bottom job is only going to last you another year at best. Having new sails is a real plus (assuming the are GOOD sails), the would cost you at least $2500 to replace. And a word of warning about surveys. They are NOT a guarantee that there is NOTHING wrong with the boat. Be sure to get a good surveyor and check out the Owners Reviews for problem areas. I hope you can get a good boat at this price.

Way under priced. You could spend another 5-6K and still come out ahead unless there is a major delamination or engine issue, which is rare on this model. If it passes a survey you have one great deal. Should go for 19-25K. Good luck

Highly reccomend getting a survey. Have the surveyor check integrity of the rudder, check for moisture intrusion in deck/hull, do a sea trial of engine, check for trapped water under cabin sole, check for leaks around the toerail/hull/deck joint.

As all have said, "one hell of a deal" I wouldn't take $20,000 for my '87 28.5 that I've owned for 3+ years!!!Definitely spend the money on the survey. As long as the Yanmar checks out and the hull is in good condition there's not alot you couldn't fix for the 8-10 grand you'll be saving. Even at $18-22,000 the 28.5 is a lot of boat for the money and a very popular model. Absolute breeze to single-hand

Thanks for your inputs. I had the survey this past weekend and met with the mechanic who has maintained the engine since new. Passed with flying colors, I bought it. The bottom line was normal waer but well maintained by the original owner. He was moving up to a Catalina 310, had purchased it and needed a quick sale. Once I add roller furling I'll be ready to go. Once again, thanks.
