Scenario: A young novice sailor asks your advice. He is interested in buying a used sailboat (1977 Catalina 22) and spots some "flaking" under the boat. He tells you, "The seller says it just needs bottom paint..." and is very excited about buying the boat. In examining the boat yourself you notice that there are no "soft spots" around the hull and that the swing keel is painted over with Rustoleum (see picture below). You tell your eager friend: A. The seller is correct. It might need bottom paint but you can sail it for awhile first. B. It must have bottom paint BEFORE you sail it. C. This is a bad deal.. the boat will need SERIOUS repairs. D. Run for the hills. This boat won't float!

A or B

The buyer could sail it now and paint it later, but I would advise sanding off the flakes and repainting prior to sailing. As for the C and D options, whether or not it's a good deal or not depends on the price and condition (there's more than just the bottom to consider). That being said, in general terms, I certainly wouldn't advise the potential buyer to "run for the hills" based on the limited information available. Trevor
