Use strop to connect foot of small jib to furler?

Hi all.I have a standard roller furling headsail on my Vega. In winds much over F4 I substitute with a much smaller hanking headsail (prob number 3) that I have fitted with slugs so it can be used with the roller furling foil.My jib halyard is 10mm pre-stretched braid on braid. It does stretch a little and when I use the small headsail the metre or so of halyard joining the peak of the sail to the swivel can kink which can foul the swivel. So I made up a strop (again with braid on braid) approx a metre with snap hooks at each end to secure the foot of the sail to the furling drum.So only a few cm of halyard between peak of sail and swivel. No more jams.. Great. But the centre of effort (right term ?) of the sail is now a metre or so higher than it otherwise needs be - precisely on the breezy days when I want to keep it low.Should I fit a wire strop to the peak of the sail - solves the stretch problem and wouldn't jam?Suggestions welcome.ThanksJohn V1447 Breakaway

Hi John,I've used AMSTEEL single braid for strops (we call them pendants). They are very easy to splice and do not stretch ... at all!Petermostlyaboutboats.ca

John,I would probably do both: one at the foot to get it off the deck and clear the rail, and one at the head to make sure the swivel is up in the right place. My furler instructions (Harken) say: "Halyard swivel should be within top 4–6" (100–152 mm) of foil unless a halyard restrainer is used." I don\'t know what brand furler you have, but the Harken MK IV Manual page 25 explains it pretty well. On the Vega I lead the halyard through a block attached to the mast just
below the masthead to give the required angle to prevent halyard wraps. (See bottom picture of page 26 on above referenced manual.) I\'ve done the same on the Albin Ballad. So far no wraps Hope this helps,Peter.mostlyaboutboats.ca
