I’m contemplating replacing my running and mast lights with new LEDs. The pros seem to be far less current draw, but what are the downsides if any?

Cost?

The LED's are more expensive, but if the lifespan claims are true and you plan on keeping the boat for along time, you will make up the price in replacments and hassels. I just received my LED anchor light by the way, can't wait to get it up the mast and then check the amp meter to see if the claims are true! Brian s/v CREW REST

What kind are you considering?

I'd say that cost is the biggest downside. If you can overcome the difference in price, the savings in battery draw and hassle of bulb replacement might be worth it. Of course, you do have to install and wire them the first time. LEDs are extremely vibration resistant and most are rated for 100,000 hours (over 11 years continuous use), so it's pretty safe that you will never have to replace them. I've been looking at replacing my crummy incandesant lights with LEDs to reduce maintainance and battery draw. I haven't found ones that fit my application, especially for the red and green navigation lights. I'm curious to know what kind you are looking at to see if they might work for me, too. Brad

May want to check that the lights you buy are approved and legal for their intended use.

led lights

Dj has a good point-all the new led lights I've seen listed are legal for powerboats only-they don't have the view angles to handle a heeling sailboat

LEDs Inside

Outside the boat isn't the only place for LEDs. I replaced a number of my cabin lights with Hella LEDs. See the link below from the photo forum with step by step instructions. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

sailboats too

I believe its Perko that has LED lights for sailboats, they are not the same as the powerboat ones, at least for running lights. There is even a 360, which surprised me.

LED Replacement lamps

are available, that do not require fixture replacement. I've seen them in single & double bayonet sockets (several years ago); and perhaps available in festoon style by now. Davis makes the "Mini-Amp Mega Lite", which I've used sucessfully. Try "Superbrightleds.com" or others... Regards, Gord
