I recently acquired a H26 water ballast boat, Is it advisable to put algicide or bleach in the water ballast to prevent odours and growth? will it damage anyting?

Thank you for your advice

I guess it depends on how long your boat remains in the water. Mine holds the same fresh water for 4 months. I definitely put 1/2 gal of bleach in when I launch the boat.

If you care about the environment, you'll just leave it alone. Anything you put in the ballast tank will end up in the water.

When we purchased our 23.5 in 1993, folks around Lake Erie were trying to figure out how to deal with the invasive species, Zeebra Muscles. We contacted the Ohio Sea Grant, an envirionmental group that's associated with Ohio State Univ. and several other universities and government agencies, because we, at the time, were planning on trailering Kinship between Lake Erie and several inland lakes in NE Ohio. The recommendation that we got was to add 2 - 4 oz. of househould bleach to the ballast tank to kill any zeebra muscles. They felt that, since chlorine naturally breaks down so quickly, that little, if any would make it into the lake, and there should be little to no environmental impact.

Or whenever it is launched. Never smelled a whiff of bleach or any foul smell when it is pulled.
