US Boat Registration

I'm looking at buying a 73 Albin Vega currently registered in Canada.
Are there any issues with registering it in the US?

Best way is to send a copy of the bill of sale with an
application to Dept of Homeland Security/US Coast
Guard and a copy of any previous registration docs you
might have. Additionally you'll need to register it
with whatever state in which you will be residing.
Each one wants a piece of the action! lol

Not all states require US documented vessels to register. When I
documented Lealea, I went to the state to ask what to do about my
state registration since a documented vessel may not display state
reg numbers. The state people told me that I could not register my
documented vessel with the state. No fees, no stickers. Nothing. I
later got a citation from the state because I failed to completely
remove one of the old state of Hawaii registration stickers.

Here is the National Vessel Documentation Office link. I documented
Journeyman when I bought her - didn't want any bow numbers - and it was
easy. Don't worry about the gross tonnage measurement, there is an
alternative rough measurement for small boats. (I guess I could pull my
application and post it if it would be of interest.) I do maritime law and
work with NVDC a lot. They are great folks, knowledgeable and nice, as I
suppose one would expect of people from Falling Water, West Virginia. Call
their number and ask for a specialist, they'll set you right. 800-799-8362.
But look at their FAQ on the attached site.

This is the address of the US Coast Guard web site
with step by step instructions for documentation of
your boat.

There are many companies that will complete the
initial process for you for a price but that is a
complete waste of money. We documented 'Southern
Comfort Too' five years ago and it was a very painless
process. We get a renewal notice every year from the
Coast Guard which we just sign and send back
indicating there is no change in the ownership or
specs of the boat. I forget what the initial fee is
for documentation but renewal is free.

Yes, I have! My boat had been previously owned by a former member of
the Coast Guard (Reserves I think) and was a documented vessel. When
I bought the boat last spring I sent in the necessary forms to have
it re-registered in my name. Sent them the required funds ($80+).
They responded to me indicating that my Albin Vega did not meet their
requirements - long enough but not enough displacement if I remember
correctly. Of course they kept the funds - no refund policy they claimed!
(My boat is still on the hard and unregistered waiting for my
impending retirement in July! I have purchased an old diesel truck
and will be towing it back from Oak Harbor, Washington to Las Cruces
next month for cosmetic make-over.)

I bought my documented Vega a little over a year ago and there was no
problem getting the state or federal paperwork transferred to my name - it
is still documented by the CG and it is now in my name. The reason I guess
is that I used a marine title company to handle all the paperwork. Yup it
cost me a few hundred dollars, but it was well worth it if you ask me - it
took me just the time to drive down and sign the papers and write the check.

Most major coastal cities have companies specializing just in such title
changes.

Some states, such as Massachusetts, do not require that a U.S. documented vessel be
registered.
