Hi Peggie, in one of the bus forums I visit there is a long discussion about composting toilets.
I asked where the large volume of urine went...some folks said into the grey tank. I was thinking that it would have to go in the black tank...right?
Thanks Peggie

I dunno what the rules for busses are...

But combining toilet waste and gray water in the same tank on a boat violates CG regs.

I know it's done on boats that just don't have any space for a separate gray water tank that are in Lake George NY and Lake Winnepesaukee NH where gray water holding is required...but that doesn't make it legal, it's not enforced. In fact, CG regs even prohibit any common venting.

Composting toilets

Hi Jack, an earlier thread referenced a new composting portable toilet for boats and RVs for a mere $800. Such a bargain. The toilet used a compost material to collect and break down solids in a self contained holding tank. Urine was collected in a separate container and disposed of in a traditional manner. I suspect there are larger more permanent units that compost solids and urine together. I know that Washington State parks use the latter system on the various islands around here then recycle the composted material as fertilizer.

Terry, urine and solid waste can't be composted together...

Because wet soggy material can't compost, it can only rot. The composting systems on land also have to drain off excess liquids, but unlike systems on boats, systems on land can drain 'em into drain fiields in the ground.

Composting is a lot more complex than many people realize.

Btw...it occurs to me that the "new" portable 800 composter may not be new at all, or even portable. 'Cuz the price and description (separates urine from solids) sounds a lot like the Air Head Airhead Toilet
