UPs furling

Mark, We purchased a UPS for our Passage 42 at the last Miami show. Since there is frequently just the two of us aboard, we thought the roller furler was the best way to go. The sail works well once deployed but is a pain to take down so we hardly used it this year. When one tries to furl the sail using the roller furler, only about the bottom third actually rolls up, leaving a large portion of the asil flogging madly. the best I have been able to achieve still leaves about 10 feet of the leach at the top flapping about. This makes it necessary to take the sail down when we're daysailing and we turn around to come home, when we'd rather furl it and take it down back at the dock. I've replaced the line on the drum with a longer piece in the hope that this would work but it has not. This leads to the following questions. 1. What am I doing wrong? 2. Should I change it over to a sock and remove the furler? 3. Is there a recommended procedure for furling the sail? 4. How tight should I try to get the luff line? Thanks for your help.

Bill, It sounds like maybe more halyard tention would be a big help. My second thought is the amount of line on the furler? All of these roll from the bottom up but if there is enough line to pull and continue rolling the sail up you should be OK. It is tuff to guestamate how much is needed in the loft so we may have even short changed youon line length. Check these two things out and if doesn't work like a charm call me and I will have one of our guys come and look at it with you. This is the first problem I have heard of. Let me know how you make out. Mark

Thanks

I'll check. I've added as much line as the drum will hold, although I used a slightly larger size than the loft installed. I'll try more halyard tension. Can you give me advice as to the amount of tension, for example how much sag?. I've been tightening it only as tight as my 180 lbs hanging on the halyard, as it exits the mast, will give. I'm a bit cautious on this point because the construction is different than what I'm used to and I don't want to damage the crane at the mast head. thanks again,
