Upper zinc in Yanmar SD 20

Can the upper zinc in the Yanmar SD 20 saildrive be changed while the boat is in the water? I'm thinking if I shut off the raw water intake, I can pull the zinc from the upper unit. I do this when I clean the strainer with some minor water intrusion. The manual says to pull the boat to replace this zinc! Pretty expensive proposition to replace a $10 part! Has anyone tried this? What experience did you have?
