Upper Shroud Chainplate Replacement

I have a crack in my starboard upper shroud chainplate. Obviously I will have to replace it, but the currently available replacement plate has a 5 hole staggered bolt pattern where the chainplate is bolted to the bulkhead and the pattern on my present plate is 4 hole inline. Has anyone done this replacement before? My Catalina 30 is a 84' hull #3701. I am told by Catalina direct support I can either use the "upgraded" 5 hole pattern which will now have 9 holes in the bulkhead or send the old chainplates to them to be basically refabricated using the old plates as a pattern. If I go with the new style plate I think I would have to strenghten the bulkhead with say a piece of 3/4" teak the size of the chainplate and bolt it to the existing bulkhead then use longer bolts. Any Catalina owner that may have done this replacement would be much appreciated.

I did replace mine on a 1989 but pattern matched. Nevertheless I had stainless steal backing plates made to give more strength. If you blow up image I think you can see them.

The 4 bolts held for 30 years I think I would go back to that rather than compromise the bulkhead by drilling more holes in it. A local shop should be able to fab the plates for you just make sure you spec 316 SS, like they say keep it simple

Thanks for the reply! I did think of a SS backing plate as well. that kind of was my idea with the teak ( a solid wood backing plate ) but I was going to bolt the teak to the bulkhead in addition to the bolts for the new pattern. I was going to actually use the 4 bolts from the original chainplate to bolt the teak plate onto the bulk head. I am thinking you got longer bolts to accommadate the SS backing plate? And did you get them from Catalina Direct?...Thanks for a reply

I am going to check on a local machine shop that can fab a new plate. But it it is not just a plate but rather a complex welded angled support and backing plate at not even right angles ...luckily the port plate is still not cracked and whole but I would replace both.

i suggest, as per my previous post, you talk to catalina yachts, not catalina direct. only one of them made your boat. we are lucky that we don't have pearsons, o'days, etc.

The email has already been sent to Catalina Yachts to inquire as to this part. I am really not understanding why the "older" chainplate is not offered by Catalina Direct as I am sure 3700 of them where at one time made and that is a very known pattern. 9 holes in a plywood 3/4" teak veneer bulkhead which most certainly has had water intrusion since the chainplate cracked can not be a good solution.
