Calling all small boat owners!
Please consider joining us for the "Sippy Cup", an informal race to Annapolis the same weekend as the Governor's Cup (8/5 - 8/7/2011). To qualify, your boat must have a PHRF rating of 220 or higher (slower). If you don't know what a PHRF rating is, or don't have one, just give us a call and we'll help you to figure it out. We use the rating only to ensure that the boats in the race are similarly matched speed-wise, so we'll all stick together pretty well. The race is run in a similar fashion to the Governor's Cup, with an early evening start, sailing through the night, and a finish during the following day. We had a great time the first year we did this, in 2009, with just a Precision 23' and a Venture 22'. Last year's race was postponed due to storms and a shortened race was held the following day in which 3 boats participated - a Venture 22, a Precision 23', and a Venture 25'. Please contact us if you are interested and would like more information. Details will follow in upcoming weeks and will be posted on our website. And please, help us encourage other small boat owners to try a "big adventure" by forwarding this e-mail (or the details) to them!
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Dobbs & Suzanne Fryberger

As the event date is approaching, I thought I'd bump this post up to the front.

In the vicinity of the #2 red nun (39'29.210N, 075'59.928W) in the North East River (upper Chesapeake Bay near Turkey Point). Kentucky is pretty far away, you'd definetly get the long distance award!

Don't think I'll make it this year. I grew up on the Maryland eastern shore and boated around Cambridge as a young lad. My plan is to trailer our Hunter 23 there for a week of sailing next year. It's about 500 miles each way.

2011 Sippy Cup results

The 2011 Sippy Cup started at 7pm on Friday evening August 5th. Three boats rendezvoused at Red #2 on the North East River - Pegehiwime (Precision 23') sailed by Jim Brown and Bud, Miss AdVenture (Venture 25') sailed by Jim VanLenten, Mark VanLenten, and Katie Roecker, and Whimsey (Venture 22') sailed by Dobbs and Suzanne Fryberger - and sailed through the night to Annapolis. Conditions started out light, with winds SE at around 10 knots, and built through the evening to SE at around 15-20 knots. The favorable wind direction granted us a great sail down the bay with just a couple tacks to make it under the Bay Bridge. It was a bit bumpy and wet, but the thrill of the ride kept us all going - and competitive!
Line honors went to Miss Adventure, with a finish time of 5:12:00am. Whimsey corrected over her to finish first, with a corrected time of 5:00:36. Pegehiwime took third with a finish time of 5:14:00. After the race, we anchored in Lake Ogleton and napped until 11am, then headed to Annapolis City Marina. Once docked, we cleaned up and trekked over the bridge to Pusser's for Painkillers and then returned for dinner at the BoatYard Bar and Grill. Congratulations to all participants, and thank you for your support of the Sippy Cup!
