I own a 1988 First 28.5.
The foam backing, which holds up the upholstery in the fore and aft cabins, is basically disintegrating. Any ideas on how to fix?

I have an 84; 456 with same problem. You remove fabric, scrape off lose foam, from back of fabric, use scrubbing brush from wifes laundry, on back. Now on where the foam still remains, on the hard surfaces, use an electric drill with a rotary wire brush, the brush that is cone shape. Put on goggles and away you go.
The foam I used to replace old one was rubber underlay, from house carpet. If you can see someone re-carpeting their home, you should pick it for nix. That is why I used it, nil cost.
Then use spray contact and glue on the foam to inside hull, then glue fabric to foam.

We replaced the deteriorated hull liner in our B351 last year with the HullBlanket type material and have been very pleased. Getting the old foam residue off is a pain. We ended up using a rotary brush on a random orbital sander to get the loose material and then had to use adhesive remover to get the last of it off. The HullBlanket is installed with spray adhesive and I used the old vinyl as a pattern for the new. The HullBlanket does not have a foam backing, but is a non-woven carpet with a good feel and is very clean. Use caution if you are planning on using carpet under layment pad- it will degrade with time. Good luck
