Bill, I am curious if I cn upgrade my old (1986) Autohelm 3000 to a new 4000 by just replacing the control head. Would you recommend such a thing, or should I just bite the bullet and get a new 4000? Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Not only difference

You would be better off getting a new ST4000 Wheel Pilot. Make sure that your boat is within the outfitted design displacement restrictions. The ST4000 and ST3000 use different wheel drive units. These run at different speeds and different hard over times. The control head software is set up for its respective drive. The other option is the Z177 retro kit. This is a new set of electronics that can be used with your old drive. The ST3000 is not directly NMEA compatible. You will need an E85001 interface box to interface it with a NMEA compatible navigator.
