I currently have the original nissan 5hp motor that is standard on the 1986 23. Anyone know what the largest recomended size/weight that the 23 can handle? In the archives there are some posts concerning Honda 10hp. I don't need anything that large but was looking to upgrade without too much reinforcing needed. Any suggestions? Thanks.

5 horse Honda 4 stroke

for me. Lots of guys have an 8 horse motor for current and such but I'm on an inland lake and the 5 horse is plenty. Wouldn't want the extra weight. Love the quiet of the Honda 4 stroke.

New Motor

I was looking at doing the same thing and e-mailed Greg over at hunter and he said that the original fiberglass motor mount was designed for a max of 10hp TWO stroke. He said he would not go above an eight without doing some refinforcing or installing a new motor mount. I have been thinking about upgrading to a honda 4 stroke 5 hp. Greg said that would be fine for the mount. Let us know what you what you get and how it works out. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria

before you upgrade

Study the prop size, you may well be able to gain all you want with a proper prop sizing, Yes small outboards are sensitive to prop size too. I think the h.p/ numbers say someting like 1 hp for each 500 lbs to get hull speed, more gets you very little performance and a lot more weight and fuel comsumption.

Agree with Mike

I have a 2000 Honda 5hp 4stroke on my H22. It's plenty of motor and very quiet. Go with the Honda!!!

Thanks for the input. The Honda sounds like the way to go.

POWER THRUSTER

As a cheap alternative! It cost about $80.00. Installs in minutes. And it added about 3 knots to my 15hp Merc that pushes a 260. I just install last week. I could see considerable increase in speed, turning ability, and best of all it save on gas. At half throttle I can cruise 5 knots and above. A far cry from 3/4 throttle and barely doing 3 knots. You can find it here in the chandlery.

Powerthruster installation

I'm just about to install the PowerThruster I bought over the winter. How did you decide the fore and aft placement? The pictures on the sebsite don't show the anode. I recall last year somebody said they placed it underneath (closer to the prop) so it was touching the metal of the fin instead of the PowerThruster metal. What did you do? ...RickM...

Power thruster

What kind of motor do you have? I just installed on on the Nissan 5 hp but have not used it yet. It mounted on the under side of the fin. The curved part goes forward. I put black electrical tape between the motor and the stainless steel. Does this help or if it for a mercury then I don't really know. I am anxious to try it out,we launch this weekend!!!
