Upgrading cabinets with teak veneer from Wood Crafters

Hello all,

I have a 20 year old Beneteau in Puerto Rico. The boat spent 7 years in charter. The cabinets by the floor are tired. At one time the Volvo dripless shaft seal dripped, deteriorating the bottom of the cabinets. I am curious if anyone has used teak veneer to dress up their cabinet faces.

Yes, Vaneer woks good. If you are not able to use clamps to hold it down, then contact cement needs to be used instead of wood glue. Also, it is a good idea to cover the corners with teak trim to protect them from being torn off. Removing as many of the exiting panels from the boat make it easier to apply the Vaneer.

You can get some teak veneers from b&b rare woods( google their site). They usually come in 4 to 10 inch pcs which need to be spliced together. It's not difficult to do. If you need instructions let me know and I will explain it the best I can

I replaced a lot of the veneer in my previous boat. I used 4x8 sheets of wood backed teak veneer from Boulter plywood. The glue is a heat activated glue that allows you to position the veneer without it sticking. This is the major drawback of using contact cement. See the link below for my write-up.

What Tim said! This is high quality veneer not the paper thin stuff you buy from most lumber stores. The heat activated stuff is also terrific...

+1 for Boulters. I live about 10 minutes away and have used them for several projects. They are a true marine lumber store and you can get great advice!

Thanks for a great post.

I own 2 boats, 1984 Catalina 36 in Michigan and 1995 40 foot Beneteau in Puerto Rico. The Catalina interior is oiled, looks great and easy to maintain. The Benetau is varnished and impossible to maintain. I suspect heat and salt water makes the Benetau life difficult.

Why did you choose Varathane oil based semi gloss? How did the color compare between the old plywood and the new veneer?

Thanks.

Nick

PS I was on a 47 ? Caliber LR recently, great great great boat.

I think I picked the Varethane because it had good reviews. Also, I was working for a HW wholesaler at the time so it was also cheap.

Nick,

The environment in Fajardo is a lot more punishing than in the great white North. I spent almost two weeks doing a Lithium install in the Fajardo marina and in just two weeks my tools ere already rusting. I was needing to wipe them down with gun oil at the end of each day!!
