HI - Looking for suggestions for upgrading controls for main. I'm thinking I need some cam cleats for the main and traveler ends. also put some new harken air blocks on the boom. I think this is all original 1981 Hunter 30 stuff. Any suggestions for rigging main sheet or blocks differently would be appreciated. Mostly cruising, but would like to be able to do a little racing occasionally. See pics.

Before you spend those boat bucks on Harken, I would suggest that you check out Garhauer Marine. They have a few different options at a "reasonable" cost. They will also custom drill your track so you do not need to drill any additional holes.

They make good quality stuff with a 10 year warranty.

I agree Garhauer is awesome! Don't use sailkote on the bearings though only use "one drop".

Agree on Garhauer. Also agree to get rid of the clam cleat and get cam cleats for the traveler control lines, you can get swiveling ones that work just great.

Looked at the Garhaur MT-2 mainsheet track and traveler. It is a good place for me to start with I think.

Paul -
I have the same traveller as yours. When I got the boat the traveller didn't work very well. I replaced the rollers on the car with new ones purchased from Rig-Rite and now the traveller car rolls just fine. Much cheaper than a new traveller:) I did upgrade the four blocks for the traveller control lines to ball bearing ones. The traveller now works like a charm and would be totally fine for racing.

I too would ditch the clam cleats and go with cam cleats. That is how my boat is set up. The clam cleats tend not to hold lightly loaded lines too well unless you really stuff the line into the cleat. Kind of a pain.

From the picture the blocks on the boom look a bit on the small side. Bigger diameter blocks will roll more freely. The air blocks are pricey, but roll great, look cool and wil last a long time.

One other thing you could do is replace the mainsheet with a nice new color-coded one. Won't change performance but sure would help the appearance.

Good luck,
Gary

Paul:

Take a look at the MT-UB setup. This is a sweet setup if it will work for you boat. If you get a chance to go to a boat show this year Garhauer may be there, they usually are.

Chicago show is this weekend!!
