Some time ago, I posted a thread on a friend's H33 which was discovered to have about 3-4" of water over the floorboards with no apparent leak in the boat. Well, I believe we have an answer. On a trip to the eastern shore of Virginia this week, his boat began taking on water again but not in an amount that would threaten the boat with a working bilge pump. Once in the slip, we found the engine stuffing box to be literally flowing. That was tightened and the leak stopped.
The part I still can't understand is why we (myself, another person, and the boatyard) didn't see the leak the first time. The boat, at that time, had not been underway in months. Yet when we pumped out the water there was no leak and still nothing for a couple of months until this weekend.
I guess it's true that nothing is really fixed until you find the cause!

I come across situations like this all the time. The stuffing box could easily leak sometimes and not at others.
My suggestion would be to replace the stuffing box with PSS drip-less shaft seal. I installed one in my current boat and have never had a problem. My last boat also suffered from that same 'mystery' leak and I too had water over the floor boards.

I gave up on my old stuffing box and went with the PSS dripless seal. I'm so glad that I did. It's been three years now and no problems, and no more repacking the gland!
