Update on Jamming Furling Mainsail

Hi all Sailors:

Thanks for all you advice!

My 4 yr old Doyle furling mainsail on my Hunter 45CC got repeatedly stuck when furling out. I did follow all the advice given to me: furl it in tight, stay on slight port tack, get the boom down, leave the mainsheet and boom vang a little loose etc.

The main problem was that over the 4 years the mainsail got stretched out forming a pouch at the luff and leech - thus is folded, jammed over and could not get furled out.

My sailmaker in Mar Del Rey did trim the sail - it worked for a few times but then it jammed again.

I got a new sail made from Mack Sails (send in your old one to get the right size!) and it worked great.

Long story short: If your sail gets streteched out you may have to get a new one!

Thanks for all your advice!

I find I have to use the out furler line to push the sail out and then tighten up with the outhaul line.

Jamming furling mainsail

Thanks, I tried that too - if pulling too much on outhaul furling line without moving the sail out it may get folded up in the mast. With my new sail I just have to pull on the outhaul with some tension on the inhaul furling line, loosen the mainsheet and boom vang and stay on slight port tack. Works fine!

Each boat has its own idiosyncrasies,

Best wishes,

Viktor
