Hi,
I'm planning on climbing the mast of my new to me 2003 B361. My main is in-mast furling. My spinnaker halyard is the only halyard outside of the mast. What should I use as a safety line if the spinnaker halyard will be the main line hoisting me up?

It's strange that you don't have a second halyard at the front size of the mast. I do have a second one (form the top of the mast) for holding the spinaker pole. Anyway, for safety purposes you could use the topping lift no matter if it's on the back side of the mast. Better than nothing.
You are gonna love it up there!!!

I've been up the mast on a 38 using the topping lift and spinnaker halyard. Not a problem if the line isn't over age. It would suffice as a safety line. It probably has a breaking strength in excess of 500 pounds if its high quality line. No matter what, I wouldn't go up without a safety line.
Plan "b" would be to drop the jib and use the jib halyard and spinnaker halyard. It doesn't take that long to get the jib down. That way you can avoid having to disconnect one line to get around the spreaders.

Its a quick trip down , if a line fails, but its the sudden stop at the end that could be serious.

I have a `99 B352 and have the same type rig setup as you. Just went up this weekend. Used the Spinnaker halyard as primary and the topping lift as the safety line. Worked great.
