Hello. I'm new here, and looking for some information. I'm planning to sail my Catalina 27 from Chesapeake Bay up to the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River next month. Does anyone have any information on the Hudson River segment of the trip from New York to Albany during May? What about current, debris, best places to overnight, etc.? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Egon Frech

Haverstraw Marina

If you get a little further up the Hudson than NYC you should check out in advance overnite possibility at Haverstraw Marina -Haverstraw NY. on west side of Hudson River. Otherwise you may have some other possibilities in Atlantic Highlands, Keansburg (Raritan River/Bay) NJ just south of NYC. Other posters may be more familiar on whats available in that bay area. Haverstraw Marina

I keep my boat at Haverstraw Marina, it is probablly a good 45 miles north on NYC. I will be moving my new boat up the river next week from Bay Shore LI and will have a better idea of Marina on the lower Hudson then. I have several areas to choose from, depending on how far I get. 1. Behind Sandy Hook NJ ther are several Marina, Garvesend bay NY has a marina, and if we make it as far and NYC there are several choices. But I have heard good things about Liberty Landing Marina on the Jersey side.

Hudson in MAY

Pick up a crusing guide, there are plenty of facilitys on the Hudson. I have made the trip twice in May as far north as Kingston ( about 100 miles north of NYC). The amount of debris depends on how bad the spring rains/flooding have been, this year they seem about average ( I keep my boat in Mystic CT, but live in Red Hook NY on the eastern shore of the Hudson just north of Kingston). Naviagating up the Hudson is pretty straight forward for the first 100 miles, plenty of water. After Kinston you get some shoaling. Study the charts closely, some of the shoals are right in the middle of the river where you wouldn't expect them . The prevailing wind SW blows right up the river, when a change in systems occurs the wind will come from the NW right down the river. In my area and northward, there is a good chance for frost in the mornings until after the full moon in may check your calender. And, there are plenty of facilities, but the farther north you go some don't open till closer to Memorial Day Call ahead. Chris

Last year...

I seem to remember that part of that canal system was closed last year for about a week in May. I believe it was caused by debris from Spring run-off. I have some sites listed on my Links page giving the web addresses of canal sites that you might want to check before leaving. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Hudson River

I have a Richardson's guide if you would like to borrow it.. Just came up the Hudson River last July.. I have numerous tips and tidbits I can share with you.. Some places we docked at .. 1. Stoney Point Marina - just south of West Point - great facilities, great staff (Malcolm is the yard manager) 2. Kingston, NY (the fee collector at the town dock is a bit of a bulldog, but the town is great !) We spent 3 days there exploring the shops and enjoying the restaurants. Live entertainment at the town band shelter in front of dock (blues, jazz, etc.) 3. There was one marina (the name escapes me, but I'll look it up in my log) but it was a 'dog' ! We had to clean the facilities before taking a shower, the docks were covered in dried up water chestnuts (hurts like h$%ll to step on these things), the only good thing was that no one was around to take our money (not that you get anything for the dockage fee) I'll re-post the name.. The owner was in Florida for the summer - no one in charge. 4. Ess-Kay Marina (on the west side of Onieda Lake) Quiet, family run - free shuttle service to Sam's Inn. Going through the lock system was fabulous - the lock staff are extremely helpful, tolerent and patient. Although you officially radio ahead to announce your request for passage, most knew you were coming, and had the locks ready for you - no waiting req'd. Buy the season pass - unless you think you can blast threw the system in a few days.. Worth the $50.00 Hate to say it, but watch out for moron power boaters.. The Hudson has its fair share of wake monsters - and the speed limit isn't always adhered to. And they seem to create a 'congo line' on weekends.. 5 or 6 cruisers 30+ feet each, means you have to zig zag across their wakes, unless you have enough freeboard to take a 4 foot wave beam on. PITA ! We tried to stay dockside from Friday at 4pm until Monday morning to avoid the swell..

Richardson's Guide

John: Thanks for the offer of the Richardson's Guide. I'll take you up on it, as I will need it only for this trip, and then return it to you, or if you would like to sell it, name a price. I tried to buy a guide on the internet, but the links to the purchase portion of the site wouldn't work! How much current is there on the river (i.e. what SOG will I make going upstream? BTW my e-mail is egonfrech @aol.com. Egon Frech
