Has anyone ever tried to single-handedly unstep the mast of a Hunter 25 (1978 vintage)? Does anyone know how much one weighs? I've done it with smaller boats, but I think the H25 may be too much for one person.

Unsteping Mast

Over the weekend my son and I unsteped the mast on out 1993 Hunter 23 and we had great difficult in bring it down. To say the least is was damn heavy, and difficult to get down. My son and I are both big guys, both over 6 feet and we couldn't hold it. It came down in sort of a controled crash. Luckly nothing was broken. If you are going to do it you self you will need to have some sort of a pully system to bring it down correctly and easily. My son an I did it the wrong way, please learn from our mistake.

Two is minimum

Based on our h27, I can't see how to get the mast down without a crane to lift it, with one person on the crane, and one on the bottom of the mast. Even then, handling the bundle of stays, and electrical disconnects is tricky.

Unstepping the H 25 Mast

I have a 1976 H-25, the mast is very heavy, do not attempt this by yourself. I have a diagram for building a rig to allow you to unstep the mast if you would like to have a copy of it. If you will contact me via email, jcal@worldnetla.net I will fax it to you or attempt to scan it and email it to you. With out this rig you should have 3 to 4 people assisting you. I am building the rig my self now. Up until this time I have had the help from my friends at the Yacht Club where I keep the boat. Be carefull!
