I will need to unstep the mast on my '84 H27. Can anyone tell me how the mast is removed from the step? I believe the mast is deck stepped, and there are a few screws on the base of the mast that go down into the deck. It also looks like there is caulk under the base as well. Is the mast stepped on top of this base, or do I need to remove the screws and break the seal? I have written procedures addressing electronics connections, shrouds and stays, but nothing about where the mast meets the deck. Any help and/or photos would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mast up step

I just had the mast pulled on my 1982 Hunter 30. It is deck stepped. I assume it is similar to the 27. We used a crane and tied a line onto the mast. Then we slid it up to a foot or so below the spreaders, being careful not to put any force on the spreaders. The tail of the line was secured around the goose neck. All stays and shrouds were loosened, then released while the crane held the mast. Then, the mast just pulled up and free of the step. The electrical connections were unplugged, and the mast was lowered to the ground. The mast is held in place by pressure from the stays and shrouds. I did not have to remove the step plate. It was pretty simple, though I did hire the marina staff to do the work. I was a helper.

Richard has it right

There is just an aluminim insert that is bolted to the deck, and sticks up a few inches into the mast. a plastic pipe with the antenna and light wiring is mounted in the middle. There are some more detailed procedures in the archives. David Lady Lillie '77 h27
