Hey all hope your summer sailing is going well. I have a few ? on mast stepping. I did it on my smaller boat, however this stick is 56' and probably heavy. I will be in a yard in NY, they have a crane and have told me they will help me out. I take it I should disconnect all wires inside at the bottom. It is deck stepped. Should I then have them hook up to the top 3rd of the mast, then disconnect all the rigging at the deck. Rear stay, furl unit, secure them so not flying around. Lift off the deck, I was hoping to set on like 4 horses next to the boat I have a lot of wiring and work to do on it. Am I forgeting anything, better methods?? Thanks in advance.... Red

Wow, that's a tall rig! If the yard is experienced there is very little to do. They will know where to attach the hoist. It will be at a point closer to center so that they can get it horizontal and onto the horses. You will want to have the wiring disconnected as you suggest. And then all the cotter rings/pins out of the turnbuckles. I always loosen the rig slightly before approaching the hoist. I am also prepared with wrench and big screwdriver to further loosen the turnbuckles in preparation to pulling the pins. They work fast so instead of putting the pins back I like to have a bag. After it is on the horses I put everything back so as not to misplace anything.

You might want to also mark the current turnbuckle positions on the threads with rigging tape. Makes it easy to retension correctly when you restep the mast.

Take pics too of the rig before hand. Also take a perm magic marker and write on each turnbuckle what/where it is, especially for the shrouds. I did & it made it a lot easier when it was re-stepped in the spring.

Definitely recommend doing this step. We just stepped our mast (similiar size) and having the turnbuckles marked was a huge time saver.
