unknown stern gland AND combi question

Hello all:
we're still trying to understand what we have for a stern gland on our Vega. The piece is presumed to originate from Vegatillbehor around the year 1985. New photos can be found here (Log In or Sign Up to View). After removing it from the boat we find that the tube contains (from forward, running aft) a fibrous ring (about ¼" wall thickness, 1" along the bore), a lip seal, a large cavity, and another lip seal. The hose barb leads into the large cavity. We would appreciate hearing from anyone with any knowledge of these beasties. Also, if we choose to replace this with a different stern gland, does anyone have a favorite (specifically for use with a combi)?

In another matter, the ball bearing on the combi unit has disintegrated (evidenced by rumbling noises when the motor was running, and a slurry of water, grease and balls when the combi was opened). A new bearing was pressed ONTO the inner piece which holds the control tube, (#18 on the standard exploded diagram) but is a loose fit on the outer piece which has the rack cut into it (#27). Our expectation is that both matings should be interference fits (i.e., need to be pressed on) but we'd like to be sure about this before using an adhesive on the loose bits. Any thoughts?

on a separate, but related issue, it is the o-rings in the combi
tube/shaft assembly from the prop forward, that protect the bearing from
immersion. replacement might be a good idea.
