We have a 1986 Hunter 34. We have some small spots of rust on the keel. When we sand it down, we get to a white coating on the parts with no rust. Anybody know what Hunter primed or barrier coated their keels with in 1986? Do I need to know this for compatibility purposes for treatment?

From 1986 to now is a long time to expect an initial barrier coating applied by Hunter to have survived with only minor breakdown. You don't indicate fresh or salt water environment.
Suspect it to be Interlux's Barrier Coat, applied by a PO or a yard/dealer in the more recent past. Rust spots are common with these steel keels where the coating breaks down and allows oxidation to occur. Mine is showing a growing number each year on the starboard side--will be grinding and coating for the coming season soon.
Suggest just grinding down the rust to bare metal, give it a spray of anti-rust primer immediately to seal off from any oxidation, brush on new Barrier Coat, bottom paint and go sailing...

My guess is that the "white stuff" is the epoxy that encapsulates the keel ? I have tried POR15 on one side of my keel and it seems to bond pretty good. It seems a lot has to do with getting right down to bare shiny metal. My job list has an entry for sand blasting the keel, a coat of Interlux 2000, fairing, 3 more coats and anti fouling

I'm not quite sure why one would apply a barrier coat to an iron keel as my guess is that it would be impossible for such a keel to blister. I'm also not sure a barrier coat is the best thing to use for rust prevention of a iron keel. I used to use POR-15 on the iron keel of my H28.5, but found it did not hold up well over time and have since removed it. In talking to Interlux techs, they told me they did not believe POR-15 was a "good under water product" and recommended the use of 3-4 coats of their Primocon prior to bottom painting. If you Primocon, you won't have to be concerned with what is on there now as Primocon is also a very good transition coating. I believe the white layer you are referring to is probably gelcoat.

Check out the paint dept at a Home D or Low--look for Rustoleum's Clean Metal Primer. I spray it on each spot ground down as soon as I take the grinder off the metal for the last time.

Suspect you could be right about the white stuff being a gel coat. I'm not painting my keel not for the third season so that more paint sloughs off and removal to refinish it will ultimately be easier.
