Unknown Fule Leak

I have a mysterious leak coming from somewhere. I have gone through the motor and tightened fuel lines, the lift pump and basically anything I can think of. I have checked the fuel filter line's, Racor fuel separator, etc.

I have cleaned it up time and again. This last time I came back to my boat after about 2 weeks and there was about 100ml sitting in the drip pan. That is a fairly substantial leak.

I have wiped down the motor as much as I can trying to make sure everything is dry so I can find the leak. I cleaned up the fuel and dried out the drip pan. As I worked on the motor and a few other items on the boat I left a dry shop towel in the pan hoping to catch any drips to try and determine where the leak is coming from and found nothing.

My boat has a Yanmar 2GMF. Has anyone else experiences mysterious leaks with these and if so I would love a few suggestions to try and track this down.

All the best!

Try these...

Assuming that you don't have a pin hole in your tank.....

I've used paper towel draped on the floor under the motor and around the fuel tank to find leaks.

Are you sure that all of the rubber fuel lines are in good condition. Even a small crack can cause a leak.

Also check all of the o-rings in the fuel filter. If one is cracked or not seated properly it can cause the small leak you describe.

The copper bushings on either side of the banjo bolts on the steel fuel lines can become deformed and leak. If you can't find the leak you describe. But a bunch. They're not expensive and should be replaced once in a while.

Finally check the fuel return line after the fuel injectors. It starts off as a steal line and the switches to a rubber hose. It's often missed....

Does the engine start ok? If so, with this big of a leak one would think the fuel return line MAY be the leaking one. If your fuel tank is like mine, it is in the aft compartment and lower than the engine. Remember, if the line is leaking away from the engine the diesel can still run into the sump.

Thanks for the feedback!

I will grab some of those copper washers & a fuel filter o-ring. I'll also check the return line.

I'll be out at the boat on Saturday and will see what I can find and report back,

Thanks again for the tips.

Warm regards!
