Unknown fixture in keel pocket

We finally completed the replacement of the keel hardware, reinstalled the keel, and have the tub back on the trailer (hooray!!!!!!!). Was going to take her out for a trial run but forgot how to step the mast, and left the instructions back in Lexington, KY (dumb move huh). Does anyone know what the device is, or what purpose it serves, that is behind and slightly above the keel pin? It has a plastic round rod inserted into a standard plumbing flange, and protrudes into the keel pocket. We replaced the plastic rod and flange, but when installing the keel we apparently made it to long. The assembly of the keel went well until it hit the rod and we had to remove it to finish the installation. We suspicion that it is a "bumper" or stabilizer for the keel, and it can only protrude into the pocket enough to touch the keel. Grover
