The continuing saga... I am now ready to paint the bottom of my Cat 22--The pt there is almost gone--it was red, and now its pink---I dont know what kind it was, but it had been in the 20 for 4 years---so I am leaning on ablative of some sort, but I dont know----Anyway to tell?---If I am going to trailer sail this how much has to be removed b4 I rept with a more apropos paint?? Also if I am sanding is a respirator necessary??? You have all bn so kind in responding to my naive posts---tyvm---Chuck

Not much!

get 80 grit dry way sanding sponges and go over the whole boat. A catalina 22 should take less than an hour maybe 1/2 an hour. DO NOT SAND THE WHITE GEL COAT OFF! You can sand it very gently to remove stains. Use a good mulit season ablaitve paint. It will stick to almost anything. This is a one day easy job. Becareful not to make a mountain out of a mole hill. That is what I did MANY YEARS AGO. I wear a reporator but many people just wear a dust mask.

Bad Bob

YES!

Do your lungs a favor and get the best P100 and organic respirator you can afford. Bottom paint, after all, is intended to kill living organisms upon contact. Keep it off your skin also. Use a long sleeve shirt with a t-shirt over your head while you look out the hole normally used for your neck. I tried using goggles and a half-faced respirator, but it didn't take long to figure out I really wanted a full face respirator. I hope you haven't done too much damage to your lungs. BTW, you build up a toxicity to this stuff. You might be able to get it on your skin this time, but you may not be able to the next time.
