Universal starting problems

I have problems starting the Universal diesel engine if the engine has been off for more than about one hour. When the engine starts after several attempts it "hunts" for a while & then clears. When it finally runs smoothly I have full power and revs and no hesitation. I've bleed the system several times, fitted new filters and checked the voltage at the glow plugs, keep the glow plugs on for 30+ seconds. There is no evidence of a diesel leak at the filters or tubing. Any suggestions on what to try next would be welcome.

I had this problem with mine a couple of times. The 3 things I did to stop it was clean/replace the air filter, cleaned out carbon build up in the exhaust elbow and bumped up the throttle. I think bumping up the throttle might have been the main fix. Next time it does it, try bumping the throttle up. These engines are made to be run higher than your typical engine. Idle for these should be 1,000-1,200 RPM.

Also, you know about draining the muffler if you crank for too long right?

There is a screw at the base of the muffler. Mine is actually very difficult to see but you can feel it by putting your hand down at the base and feeling around. I will try and take a photo of it.
