I have a Universal M4-30 diesel in my 1974 O'Day 32' CC that originally had an Atomic 4 gas engine. There was a Fireboy Halon 1301 automatic fire supression system, which I plan to replace, and Xintex can't tell me how to implement a fuel shutoff to kill the engine when the system discharges, as my engine is not electronically controlled. Does anybody know how this can be implemented?

Is interrupting the power the method you're suggesting?

When I start my engine, the procedure is to hold in a button that starts the fuel pump and heats up the glow plug, then kicking the starter with a second button. Killing the engine is accomplished by pulling up on a lever that starves out the fuel. I don't know if just interrupting power to the fuel pump will do the trick. And I need to figure out how to trigger this if the automatic fire suppression discharges. A NC relay should be easy to implement, but I'm probably overlooking something important.

Installing a solenoid valve in the fuel line would give you quick fuel flow control.

Just be aware that whatever you install will be another possible point of failure.

Well i dont know of any motor that auto shuts down becasue of the danger a false shutdown could cause which is why even oil pressure and water temp only sound alarms

The fuel pump should really be wired in a way that requires the motor to be cranking or running to stay on in normal use

Your engine would not stop running by interrupting power if your pulling a lever to close off fuel flow. You would have to do as Ross has suggested, install a solenoid in your fuel line & interlock it with the fire suppression system. Just be to wire into the engine's ignition circuit so you not creating a parasitic electrical draw when the motors not running.

RAD, here on this forum, has an O'Day 32' CC with a diesel, and he told me he doesn't think a fire suppression system is necessary with a diesel. Seems to make sense, as diesel isn't very flammable or explosive. And as posters to this thread have pointed out that that solenoid is just another failure point. I will add a CO detector.

Some construction equipment has low oil pressure engine shutoff circuits. The oil pressure gauge is a meter relay, if the oil pressure drops below safe levels the engine shuts down before it distroys itself.

For what it's worth, most new sailboats do have halon systems in the engine compartment. Diesel might not explode but it sure does burn. A CO/smoke detector would be a good thing.

From what I had read, Halon is no longer used, and Xintex's website lists two alternate clean agent systems. When I called about recharging my system (it was last checked in 1988-89), they told me they no longer service these units, and I would need to go over to one of their current systems.
