Do to overheating issues last season ,I recently installed a new raw water pump, new heat exchanger and new hoses. When I first started it up at the dock it overheated but after learning how to properly burb the engine problem went away thanks to all the help from people here. Well took it out for first water test this weekend and the engine temperature never went above 140 . is that to cold ? I have a 160 thermostat in there ,also I live in the northeast and water temperature is still cold below 60 degrees. I know it could also be a bad reading from the sender . I plan on bringing a thermostat gun to take a reading while running . Could it be anything else, and is this a big issue?

Those temp gauges aren't that accurate, and your overheat may have damaged the sender. The laser thermo will tell the tale. But 140 in cold water isn't bad.

Hey,
Either your thermostat is bad or the temperature gauge is wrong. After 5-10 minutes of running under load the minimum temperature should be what the thermostat opens at. When you see 140 on the gauge, are the lines running to / from the heat exchanger hot? If the engine temperature is REALLY at 140, the thermostat should be closed and those lines should be cool.
