Looks like I might have to replace my old engine, any opinions on what is a good brand and model would be to replace it with, as well as cost estimates. Thanks

Stick with drop in replacement

A Universal is a good engine . My 86 Catalina had one . I was at least the 3rd owner. I have talked with the gent I sold the boat to and it still is running great. If you take care of the new engine it willl last a long, long time. That's one of the advantages of diesels.

M25 Replacement

You didn't say how old your boat was, but since it has an M25 like I have in my 83 Cat 30 it is probably mid 80's. The cost of a new diesel replacement from what you might find in the archives is going to be a big number vs the value of the boat. Since I believe in trying to fix before I buy new, you might wish to consider rebuilding. You didn't say why you feel you need a new diesel.

Why I think I need a new engine

The reason I think it needs a new engine, or possible a rebuild is I had the engine serviced and they failed to screw the oil sender plug back in tightly and it dumped all the oil out. I was in high winds and could not hear the alarm. I ran the engine for over 30 minutes with no oil. Not really sure how this is going to play out, but it looks like the yard is not going to stand behind their work... So I am just looking at options, looks like a replacement Universal will run me about 6K plus installation.

Have you put in fresh oil and tried to run it? I can't believe it's a total loss. Even if you need bearings, rings, connecting rods and more. Your estimate of 6K for the engine alone could mount to 10K or more if the yard does the work.

Or you could look for POed M25s

They weight about 237 pounds and can be relatively easily removed and replaced by an owner and a couple of handy friends. Jim, please let us in on the secret of what boat you have. It would be harder to replace on a C30 than say a C34 or C36 which have more room and a more direct line to the companionway.

Thanks for the ideas, I have a Catalina 30 and I have replaced the oil and it does run. I am going to run it hard this weekend and see what happens.
