I recently purchsed a 1986 catalina 27 in very nice condition. The previous owner went thru all the systems with me but I now know he give me {maybe} some bad advice on turning off the universal m-18 engine {w/500 hrs}. He used the decompression device. By reading the owners manual I have found that could cause damage to the vavles. I am assuming I need to adjust the throttle linkage to idle back far enough to shut the engine off. Is that correct? thanks, jack

The black Tee handle in cockpit should be

a fuel shut-off. For most diesels procedure is to shut off fuel and then turn off electrical to shut down engine.

Are YOU sure its the decompression valve?

Are you sure its the decompression valve? The previous owner may have incorrectly thought the fuel cutoff was the decompression valve. On my '85 C27 with M18 the decompression valve is located on top of the valve cover but has no control cable hooked up to it. If I have to shutdown the engine using the decompression valve I have to physically go downstairs to actuate the valve manually. The fuel cutoff has a control in the cockpit. Just a thought...

I bet your both correct!

The previous owner did tell me that the t-handle in the cockpit {by the rpm gauge, fuel gauge} was a decompression valve. From what your telling me it is a fuel shut off. Thanks, for the info, I'm sure to have more question's as I have fun with the new toy! Thanks again, Jack

M-18 Instructions

I have a M-18 in my 30 footer and we have read over the instruction manual til we got everything down on start-up, operation and shut down. I pull the "black T-handle" to turn the engine off, then turn the key to the off position. It is for fuel shut off. I suggest you stay with what the manual requires. Bob

Dont forget about that decompression valve though

The best use of the decompression valve is when your batteries run low. If your battery is low and the engine won't start, have someone run downstairs and hold that valve open, then hit the starter. Without compression, the engine will turn a lot easier and faster. Once the engine gets up to speed (4 or 5 seconds) let the valve go closed and the engine should start right up. It's gotten me home on a weak battery more than once.
