UNIVERSAL M 12 V BELT

I need to replace the belt on my Universal M 12 engine. I replaced the original to me belt with a Napa belt of the same length initially. The Napa belt is slightly rubbing the oil filter and creating the belt dust in the engine compartment. Many members have posted comments about M 25 engine belts but I have not located any comments about the M 12. Does anyone know if the Universal original equipment belt fits better than Napa (Gates) belts? Has anyone tried using a shorter belt to bring the alternator pulley inward? If so, which belt did you use?

Thanks,

Stan

Stan, belt lengths are usually number like 7300, 7395 and 7400. You didn't tell us which belt you have. You can buy longer or shorter ones. My experience was I started with a 7400 and then a 7350, but wound up with a 7395.

Here's the story:

Get creative, you can do it!

Thanks Stu! I should have posted the belts that I tried. The Napa belt that is too long is a 7355. The belt that is way too short (even if I dismantle the alternator) is a 7330, so I have to be somewhere between these two belts. The 7355 is 13/32" x 36 1/8" OC. The 7330 is 25/64" x 33 5/8" OC. I think that I need to try a belt that is about 35" or 35 1/4". I think that I will buy a couple of sizes and return the one that doesn't fit after I complete the job. I also changed the Groco fuel filter to a Racor and the Facet pump filter. The Groco filter was really dirty and they are $50.00 each. The Racor filters are about $20.00 each. I am replacing the secondary filter with a Universal once I can get the old Fram filter to break free.

Fellow Universal M 12 Diesel Owners:
I installed a Gates XL 7350 V belt on my engine today and it appears that it will clear the oil filter without rubbing.

Great to hear, Stan. Thanks for getting back to us with your success.

Re: the Facet pump. Make sure it runs: tank > Racor > Facet pump. You do NOT want the Fact and its filter first before the primary.

Way to go, buddy! Congratulations. :)
