It could be that I was the only one out there that did not know this -
While almost in the shipping channel in the Chesapeake and while motoring south, engine noise increased and smoke started rolling out of the cabin. :eek:I killed the engine, grabbed a fire extinguisher and went to look for the source.
As it turns out, Universal used 1.25" schedle 40 galvanized pipe and fittings to direct the exhaust from their manifold to the muffler. That is to say all but the last piece which is a thin gauge dish washer tail piece adapter like you would get at Homer's. :naughty: Condenser water after leaving the heat exchanger is directed into the exhaust stream with this device. It is wraped in insulation so you can't inspect it short of cutting off the insulation. I would suggest trying to flex the fitting with the insulation in place. If it moves, you could save yourself some serious problems. You can't run the engine with water streaming into the bilge and 100% of the diesel exhaust exiting through the companion way. I was able to replace everything at the local hardware store. I replaced all the plumbing, the tail piece was replaced with a 1.25x.75 tee and a brass barb to MIP adapter, all schedule 40 stuff. Mapp gas, PB blaster, a large vice and an 18" pipe wrench are the tools needed.

A not uncommon problem. Everyone should be inspecting these and replacing as necessary. Its a maintenance item.
