Looking at a Pearson 33 w/25 hp Universal Kubota D950. Appreciate hearing thoughts comments on both Universal and Kubota. Thanks and if you are in northern New England, stay warm. -13 this morning in my town.

Most every Pearson 33 I have been on has had a Yanmar 3GM20 fresh water cooled engine. The 31's also use a Yanmar as to the 36-2's. Perhaps the one you are looking at has been re-powered? The M-25 (-XP, XPB etc. etc.) is a good engine and is indeed a Kubota block. Both Kubota and Yanmar are rugged Japanese diesels. I guess I would be asking if, when or why it was re-powered?

Thanks Maine Sail and Stu for quick responses. Should have mentioned she is the earlier 33 (mfg between '69 -'75) and originally had an Atomic .

Ah yes the original Pearson 33 not the later model.. Still the M-25 is a very good motor. Stu's links will tell you just about anything you need to know, and do read them because there are a number of critical upgrades or fixes that should have been done, but may not have.. Also get a good surveyor. Tony Theriault is excellent..

I have a Universal 5411 in my boat and an very impressed with it. You can't beat Kubota for durability and parts availability. Universals marinization wasn't very good, Beta did it much better. Just make sure the original wiring harness has been fixed per Mainsail's instructions. Universal used the Hurth gearbox which can have issues as well.

The Universal M25 is my favourite engine: smooth, quiet, easy to start, easy to get parts for... Some models have issues with the RW pump - Check that you have the pump model that's NOT the problem (sorry, memory's the second thing to go and I've forgotten the first. One of the models was Johnson but I can't remember if that was the Good One or the Bad One.)

Unfortunately now that Catalina has switched from Universal to Yanmar, Universal dealers are getting harder to come by. Fortunately you can usually get the Kubuta part instead. (and Beta has basically taken over for marinized Kubutas)

The RW Pumps are Sherwood and Oberdorfer. You want the Oberdorfer. The Sherwood is junk. If the engine you're looking at has the Sherwood, don't let that stop you. It's an easy swap and only a couple hundred dollars.

Things to watch for on the M-25

Maintenance, Upgrades & Urgency Level
Alternator Bracket Upgrade = CRITICAL
Wiring Harness Upgrade = CRITICAL
2" to 3" Heat Exchanger = MEDIUM
Sherwood to Oberdorfer Water Pump = MEDIUM
Change Hurth Gear Fluid Yearly = HIGH

Maine Sail is right, although I'd call the switch to an Oberdorfer pump HIGH on my list.

He used the word "Critical" and here are our C34 Critical Upgrades, which include a LOT of M25 series engine information and suggestions. It is/was included in the wiki link earlier:
