Hello Forum!

Every time I go to the boat I come back with more questions for you:

1. Is there a website that you would recommend for buying maintenance parts for the Universal Engine - filters, belt, etc? (I'm in the U.S.)

2. What regular maintenance do you recommend on the engine? I have oil filters, fuel filter, air filter, check water filter

3. Does anyone here have had experience replacing the hoses in the engine? hoses in mine are starting to crack.

4. I'm trying to figure out an affordable way to keep my dinghy out of the water. Has any one use the type of davits that you glue to the boat, and clip to the transom? other recommendations?

Thanks everyone!!!

Is your new best friend :)

Hose "cracking" I assume you mean they are painted and that is cracking. If hose are cracking then they have to be replaced ASAP. I replaced all of mine, most are pretty straight forward, except one in the back, that one I ended up uprising the ID by 1/8" as the stock size was impossible to get on.

Thank you JRT! That link is priceless! I will order the hoses. Any tips/lessons from your changing all the hoses?

Heating the hoses in boiling water helps get them more pliable, it is ok for a few, and a real pain as you work to the back ones. Drain coolant of course and lots of towels.

i have had mostly good luck ordering engine parts from Kumar Bros in N. I ordered a head complete with valves, gasket set, three pistons (one oversize) and ring set. The first head they sent bolted on correctly but was for a smaller block. They did stand behind the error and did send a replacement head gasket N/C. I did have an issue with one o-ring (lower right corner of gear cover). The o-ring that they sent was too large a cross-section so it didn't go in and seal correctly.

Your Universal engine is a marinated Kubota
The M25 is a D850
The M25XP is a D950
Most of the engine parts can be gotten quite inexpensive from ebay and Amazon.
Filters and hoses can be found at any auto parts store

Yes, I even found the crazy short molded curved hose behind the belt pulley at Advance Auto

For any curved molded hose I take it with me to the auto parts store and look for a hose that has that curve as a part of the hose. I then cut off the rest.

I very much enjoyed having these davits on my boat (Martek, I believe). You might find the Snap Davits that attach to the transom to be useful.

Before you install davits, you might want to check with your marina. At mine, it would add a bunch to the moorage because anytime I add anyting to the boat, they run out and measure it so that they can added more cost. My Mantus 35lb anchor was 6" longer tham my 35lb CQR which kicked my moorage up. I put my bar-b-que on the stern-rail of the puchpit and that kicked it up another foot. Not surprisingly, it took 3-months for them to drop it back down after I removed the BBQ. :kick: :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Holy Cow! Where I am, if it's a 38' boat, that's what's used for length-based charges, as far as I'm aware. And, it's self reported (owner reported).

Also, if you have a local industrial diesel engine shop they can often do more involved work much cheaper.
4 or 5 years ago the engine injector pump on our M25XPB in our Cat 310 failed.
The Universal distributor wanted over $1500 for a rebuilt pump. Our area has a lot of agricultural industry, and I called one of the diesel engine shops. I gave him the Kubota model number, he had the parts for the injector pump on the shelf. 2 days later and $520 for parts and labor and I was good to go.
By the way, it is a really easy injector pump to change, I was surprised.

This is a cross reference chart I found some years back. Sorry it isn't sharper, I can't remember where I got it and I have looked for a better copy, but no luck.
This shows the M25XP as a Kubota Z-950 and the M25XPB as a D-1005E
When I
kubota engine data.jpg
had that injector pump rebuilt, I gave him the D-1005E info and that worked out.
