Universal Engine Blowing Oil

In the process of looking over the engine of a Catalina 36, oil is observed to be dripping out of the crankcase air breather filter. The engine is a Universal Model MPX-25, with approximatley 2000 hours. Inspection of the oil dip stick shows no water, but the oil is very sooty looking. Any suggestions on what the possible problem(s) could be, would be greatly appreciated.

overfilled oil?

. Since you've already checked for the most damaging circumstance (water in the oil) & ruled it out. Check the oil level your dipstick. On my Universal M-15 the breather tube will spit oil out if I overfill it.

Thanks for the idea, but no soap.

This oil is not coming out of the dip stick tube unfortunately. It's dripping out of the crankcase breather filter. My only thought about the situation is that the problem may be bad rings in one of the cylinders.
